Checked in with Us immigration on Fri--not a pleasant experience, but were finally underway again. Stopped at DeTour village--to gas up and coffee-up--great docks and friendly people. East winds made the seas a bit rough so we did some rocking and rolling but nothing to be afraid of(I didn't need my lifejacket on!) Headed for Mackinac Island Sunday morning-in the dense fog once again--so bad we couldn't even see the breakwater coming into the harbour until we were nearly on top of it--thank heavens for the chart plotter--we knew where it should be!! Frist pic is us tying up and you can see the fog in the background--in a later pic you will be able to see the breakwater at the harbour entrance. The British built a fort on Mackinac Island in 1770--the straits of Mackinac join Lake Michigan to lake Huron so the location was strategic. 2nd pic shows the fort on top of the hill. The canon booms many times a day and never fails to scare the daylights out of us. A lot of history here---lots of beautiful big old homes and of course The Grand Hotel-a destination in itself!! Sunday afternoon we headed out on our bikes to circumvent the island--an 8 mile paved bike trail. Lots of great things to see along the way --especially the arch rock.3rd pic This morning was rainy and overcast with t-storms forcast so decided to stay put--this afternoon turned out lovely so we biked once again--so the last pics are of the flowers in front of the Grand Hotel and the view from the top looking down at the harbour. The last pic is the main street --no cars are allowed on the island--just bikes and horses----and--fudge shops--lots of them!!!!!!
